Who We Are

About Unity Christian Church

Over 200 combined years of faith rooted in Radford, Virginia, and growing still.

Two Congregations, One Family

Unity Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was established on January 1, 2012, when First Christian Church and Radford Christian Church joined together as one. The process that led to this union was a testament to the faith and vision of both congregations.

In September 2010, exploration of a joint congregation led to the formation of a Unity Committee composed of six members from each church. Within three months, both congregations determined that union was the right path forward.

On January 2, 2011, the first joint worship service was held at First Christian Church on Tyler Avenue. Excitement and love grew rapidly. By June of that year, joint services moved from once a month to twice a month.

Both congregations voted overwhelmingly in favor of joining under the new name of Unity Christian Church. In November 2011 they worshipped together at the Carter Street location to allow renovations at Tyler Avenue to begin. In early January 2012 the two became one.

God has blessed us to witness and participate in the most exciting event in the history of over 200 combined years of two of Radford's longest-standing congregations.

What We Believe

As part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), our faith is shaped by a few core convictions that define how we worship, serve, and live together.

๐Ÿค
Christian Unity

Unity is part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a movement rooted in the belief that Christians are called toward unity rather than division. Here at Unity, that means working alongside other churches and faith communities to serve our neighbors, care for people, and build stronger community together.

๐Ÿ“–
Freedom of Conscience and Study

As a Disciples of Christ church, we believe faith involves both heart and mind. At Unity, we encourage people to ask questions, study scripture thoughtfully, and grow in faith together without pressure to have everything figured out.

๐Ÿž
Open Communion

At Unity, everyone is welcome at the Lord's Table. Like many Disciples of Christ churches, we celebrate communion every Sunday as a reminder that God's grace is open to all people, not just a select few.

๐Ÿ’ง
Believer's Baptism

We practice believer's baptism by immersion, meaning each person chooses for themselves when they are ready to respond to God's call. At Unity, we see baptism as the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith, growth, and service.

๐ŸŒ
Inclusion

Unity believes the Church should be a place where people feel welcomed, valued, and respected. As part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), we are committed to extending compassion and hospitality to people of every background and walk of life.

Prayer Garden

Designed and built by Eagle Scout Dax Sutherland, our Prayer Garden is a quiet outdoor space open to the entire community. It includes a Memorial Garden where church members may have their ashes interred, with a wall plaque honoring those who rest there.

The garden is lovingly maintained by Dottie and Ronnie Wheeler and is open to anyone who needs a peaceful place to pray or reflect.
